School
staff tests their dairy skills
Fonda-Fultonville district superintendent Dr. James Hoffman,
high school principal David Halloran, middle school principal
Beth Donovan, and second grade teacher Linda Hanson took a
seat—or more accurately, a milking stool—in support of local
agriculture at Montgomery County Farm Bureau's "Sundae at the
Farm" held Sunday, September 20 at Sand Flats Orchard in Fonda.
The school representatives squared off against a team from the
Town of Mohawk in a fun-filled milking contest. Each contestant
spent two long minutes hand milking one of two Brown Swiss dairy
cows. The team that collected the most milk was declared the
winner. Fonda-Fultonville managed to "squeeze" out a victory
thanks in part to the quart and a half milked by Mrs. Hanson.
"Agriculture is an important part of our community," said Dr.
Hoffman who had never milked a cow. "This was an great way to
remind everyone of that fact."
The district had close ties to the entire day. Sand Flats
Orchard is owned by Jim and Meg Hoffman; Mrs. Hoffman is one of
our sixth grade teachers. F-F freshman Dylan Angus of
Eldalechris Farm steadied one of his grandfather's dairy cows
for the contest.
